When you nestle down into your bed at night, you're laying on a lot more than just a mattress. Skin cells, sweat, fungi, mold, and dust mite droppings build up in mattresses over time, and can cause skin allergies and respiratory issues.
Dust Mites in Your Bed
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that survive in warm, humid environments and feast on flakes of human skin. Considering that the average person spends 8 hours a day in bed, mattresses are a perfect breeding ground full of mite-ready snacks.
Skin cells are hard to digest - kind of like trying to eat hair or feathers - so dust mites have potent digestive enzymes in their guts to help break these cells down. Their feces also contain these enzymes, which are powerful allergens that can cause skin irritation and make people sick. Folks who are allergic to dust mite droppings may have asthma-like symptoms, eczema or chronic sinus problems. Regular steam-cleanings will sanitize your mattress and help eliminate these pests.
We recommend having your bed professionally cleaned at least once per year. You may also want to consider investing in a mite-proof mattress cover. Keep in mind that beds are not the only place that dust mites and other pests like to hunker down. Mites can also be found in carpets, furniture, pet beds, and more. We can provide all of these additional cleaning services for you, just ask your scheduler or technician for details.
